Meet Susan Hughes

ADHD Parent Coach

I help parents discover new joy in parenting their child with ADHD. Let’s find better ways to raise your children into happy, responsible adults.

As an ADHD Parent Coach, my mission …

My mission as an ADHD Parent Coach is to end the fighting and stress and miserableness which happens in families when parents are frustrated and children feel misunderstood.

The goal is to support parents to understand their children and build healthy relationships with their children.

I spent 20 years in finance. Then I became a parent and my priorities changed.

I wanted to be the best parent I could be but found I was severely lacking the skills. I first trained as a coach for personal development but then discovered that I could use the coaching skills in my parenting.

As our family evolved, we learned that our child was not finding school easy. He was diagnosed with dyslexia and then eventually with ADHD. Throughout this process, I found it very difficult to access appropriate parenting support.

So, I decided to create the support myself and went back to University to study the benefits of ADHD parent coaching. You can even read my theses online, Coaching parents of children with ADHD: A Western Australian study

My Thesis on ADHD Parent Coaching

Parents of children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) often experience emotional and behavioural difficulties that contribute to stress and conflict in their family relationships. ADHD Parent Coaching is a promising intervention for these families; however, little is known about its effectiveness. This study explored the effects parent coaching had on parents of children with ADHD using descriptive case study methodology. Read my thesis.

I coach because I know there is a more effective way of parenting these children.

I get so much personal reward when I coach a parent in finding a positive way of interacting with their child. I know that there is a positive impact on that child’s future by having a parent who understands and doesn’t judge.

There is a lot of research which shows that if children with ADHD do not receive treatment, they can have negative outcomes (R. Barkley, 2018). As parents, we have an important influence on the early years and the earlier we learn the impact of ADHD, the earlier we can provide appropriate parenting.

Parenting is one of the most difficult jobs in the world.

We are given responsibility for equipping our children with the skills to be independent adults. When ADHD creates executive functioning deficits, it can feel like our child will never be independent.

I believe we need to live in the moment and not let our fear of the future impact the now. Believe in our child and support them to be their version of an adult. Be mindful of inflicting our way of living on to our child’s future. The most important aspect of parenting is building a healthy relationship with our child.
