Thriving Kids has started. Here is what it means for parents of children with ADHD.

Last year I wrote about the worry behind the Thriving Kids headlines. The program began on 1 October 2026, so here is a short update on what we now know.

What is Thriving Kids?

Thriving Kids is a new national program for children aged 8 and under with developmental delay and/or autism who have low to moderate support needs. It offers information, advice and early support through the places families already use, such as GPs, early learning centres and schools. Your child does not need a diagnosis to get help.

What changes with the NDIS?

Nothing changes straight away.

  • Children’s access to the NDIS stays the same until 1 January 2028.
  • The WA Government says children who join the NDIS before that date can stay until they turn 9.
  • Children with a permanent and significant disability, including those with high support needs, will continue to be eligible for the NDIS.
  • The detail of the 2028 changes is still being worked out.

Where does ADHD fit?

ADHD is not named in the program. Thriving Kids is described as support for children with developmental delay and/or autism, and children aged 9 and over are outside it. Because no diagnosis is needed, a younger child with developmental concerns can still ask for early help. Even if ADHD is only suspected, seek support as early as possible. You do not need to wait for a diagnosis. ADHD Australia has called for children with ADHD not to be left behind as the program rolls out.

What you can do now in WA

More services are due to roll out through 2027. I will keep you updated as the details are confirmed.
